HOME-START Exeter and East Devon recently received the fantastic news that it has secured funding from another source to expand into Mid Devon and, therefore, will be running a Volunteer Preparation Course starting in the town this month.

Home-Start Exeter and East Devon will also be setting up a weekly group in Crediton to support mothers in the perinatal period who are struggling because of their mental health.

Home-Start Exeter and East Devon is a local charity with trained volunteers helping families with young children through their most challenging times when they need help the most.

Families may be struggling with poor mental or physical health, isolation, bereavement, financial concerns and many other issues.

The charity says its aim is to give children the best possible start in life and it works alongside parents so that they feel better equipped to parent effectively, able to cope, and feel socially connected within their own community.

Each scheme is independent and managed by a Board of Trustees drawn from the local community.

Jo Darke, Funding and Development Manager, said: “We know there is a need in Mid Devon and we regularly receive enquiries from referrers so we are very excited that we will be able to expand our boundary and provide much-needed support to families.”

Jo appealed for people to step forward to become a Home-Start Volunteer.

She said that volunteers are a lifeline for families, helping them get back on their feet and develop the skills they need to cope in the future.

She added: “We couldn’t carry out this vital work without volunteers, so if you are a parent or grandparent and can spare two to three hours a week to do something amazing, please contact us today.

Jo explained that a Volunteer Preparation Course would be held in Crediton, starting on Thursday, January 23.

She explained that the popular course is social and friendly, adding that it draws on the experience people have as a parent.

She added that the course combines with the experience gained supporting a family, adding that it can act as a wonderful stepping stone into future careers.
