THINK of a sport and there is probably a sports person living locally who has competed at national or international level.
With this being so much a summer of sport, an exhibition about many of the types is on show at the Old Town Hall on Crediton High Street, part of the bigger Crediton Area History and Museum Society's exhibition about the town.
Among the sports represented are rugby, swimming, bowls, cricket, badminton, taekwon-do, football, motor racing, and pentathlon.
It is a fascinating exhibition, just snippets about each person who have all achieved so much that they deserved more space, that is simply is not available at present.
For instance, Sophie Skinner has represented Great Britain since 2007 in the pentathlon and several times captained the GB team.
Another young person is Rowan Crossman, now aged 20, who represented England in the Four Nations' tournament this year and was a runner up in the men's singles and the mixed doubles in badminton, gaining medals in previous years as well.
Or Becky Tancock who, before she married and Becky Brookes, represented this country in taekwon-do from at least 2000.
Then there are swimmers Darren Beer and Robert Brimacombe, the first fireproof suit in motor racing on view from Fred Saunders who was known as "Fearless Fred" and John Symes who, in 1900, was a member of the England cricket team playing at the Paris Olympics.
That was the only time cricket has been part of the Olympics. The only game was between England and France, England winning by 158 runs.
David Nation, who put the exhibition together, said he had been amazed to discover just how many high achieving sports people lived in this rural area.
"Talking to people such as Becky Tancock and Sophie Skinner you realise their dedication to their sport," said David.
He added that a much bigger exhibition could have been staged if there had been the space.
The display runs until October and is of interest as much to local people as to visitors, who are sure to recognise some of the names.
