THE letter entitled “Shame on you Mid Devon District Council, writes Crediton resident” appeared in the Courier on Friday, August 3, issue 1201.
The letter was also sent to Stephen Walford, chief executive at Mid Devon District Council (MDDC) in Tiverton regarding the proposed sale of the Crediton Council Offices in Market Street.
The resident felt that since Tiverton took over from Crediton Urban and Crediton Rural District Councils in 1974, absolutely nothing has been done in Crediton.
The letter explained that the old Police Station (currently the Council Offices) was purchased by Crediton Urban District Council for the people of Crediton and offices at Rosemont in Union Terrace were for people in rural Crediton.
Rosemont was sold off by MDDC and staff were moved above the former NatWest Bank building, and then a few years later, to the Council Offices in Market Street.
There were originally 17 members of MDDC staff at the Council Offices in 1974 but since 2016 there have been none.
The letter writer feels that as the offices are used by so many individuals, organisations and charities that they should remain as a Community Hub.

What you told us ……….
I know the Town Council cannot complain directly to the Local Government ombudsmen and it is up to those affected to take the case to that office, but I don’t think people of Crediton realise what they are on the verge of losing if they don’t stand up and be counted. From what I have read, the building originally belonged to and was paid for by the town but was absorbed into MDDC on its inception. Since then, it seems, Crediton has played second fiddle to Tiverton, to its huge disadvantage.

It’s very disappointing, aggravating and underlines the fact that Crediton gets sidelined again. Our needs as a town are not being met by Mid Devon District Council.
Paul McLoughlin, Crediton
It belongs to Crediton, what on earth do they think they are doing?
Peter Brewer, Crediton
I think it’s wrong. Have they been influenced by the buyer? Who is this buyer anyway? It seems like democracy turned in favour of a commercial venture.
