The story appeared in the Courier on Friday, December 18, issue 1064.

In the story mid Devon District Council says that it is really pleased that the amount of recycling has increased significantly in the mid Devon area since the introduction of the new green box.

Cardboard collections, have now been extended to all households, rather than just in the urban areas.

The biggest change has been the collection of mixed plastics which, in the last three months, has increased by 23 tons to 103 tons, and dry recycling which has increased by 25 per cent.

The introduction of the blue food caddy has now been completed across the district. There is normally a 20 per cent increase in food waste over the Christmas period and the council hopes to see a significant increase in the amount of food waste in the blue caddy collections over the festive season.

This increase in recycling has reduced the amount of landfill waste per household.

The council is encouraged by the response in mid Devon and hopes that when all households are fully familiar with the new scheme, performance figures will rise even more.

What you told us ……….

I think the new recycling scheme is fine. It might be a bit harder over Christmas. I’ve been using the new food caddy and I think it’s good.

Sallyann Botting, Crediton

The new recycling scheme is better. I like it very much. My recycling is collected every other week and the food caddy once a week – it’s good.

Alexandra Buller, Puddington

At Down St Mary the recycling wasn’t collected this morning and its blown everywhere. I did get my new blue caddy today. I think it’s an excellent service and collecting cardboard and plastics is much better.

Joanne Jones, Down St Mary

There are so many bins in my garden now that I have to remember which is which. The lids disappear when it’s windy and I have to put a stone on top to stop it happening. I am elderly and I have to ask my daughter to help. It takes a lot of time to sort, but I don’t mind doing it – I’ve always recycled.
