THE story "Shock as Mid Devon Cabinet votes to sell Council Offices to commercial buyer " appeared in the Courier on Friday, June 22, issue 1195.

The decision by Mid Devon District Council (MDDC) to sell the Crediton’s Council Offices to a commercial buyer caused shock and disappointment throughout the local community.

The town council has since voted unanimously to move from the building which was previously owned by the people of Crediton and transferred by Crediton Urban Council to MDDC when it was formed in 1974.

Cabinet previously turned down a bid from Crediton Town Council suggesting they increase the bid and although town council increased the bid Cabinet still decided to sell the building to a commercial buyer.

The building is also currently used by local groups including Crediton Hamlets Parish Council, Tiverton and Crediton Community Transport and Citizens’ Advice. It is not yet known where these groups will meet in future.

MDDC recently sold Tiverton Town Hall to Tiverton Town Council at 50 per cent of the building’s restricted value setting a precedent which was not extended to Crediton Town Council.

Although most councillors supported the sale of the offices to Crediton Town Council a handful of Conservative councillors were able to vote against the wishes of the council.

Do you think residents in the Crediton area are treated fairly by Mid Devon District Council - not just on this issue but in general?

What you told us ……….

I don’t think we are treated fairly, we never have been - we are completely out on a limb. It’s terrible that they have sold the Council Offices - where will town council go?

Crediton Resident

I am not at all impressed by the sale. I think it’s another way Tiverton don’t like Crediton. I know they have to consider the finances, but really they don’t like Crediton.

Crediton Resident

It just sounds like a "rip off" and MDDC making money at Crediton’s expense. I wonder if there is a political motive. Perhaps town council could buy the old Nat West building?

It’s a shame - it’s such a shame. It should be kept for Crediton. I also think it’s a shame that they took away the front desk - it’s made it very difficult for some people.
