Anaerobic digester to be built in Crediton

THE story entitled “Crediton gets green light for ‘green’ gas as digester plan is approved” appeared in the Courier on Friday, June 14, issue 1246.

Members of Mid Devon District Council’s planning committee voted, nine votes to two, to approve the plan for the construction of an on-farm anaerobic digester on land east of Lords Meadow Industrial Estate in Crediton.

The application was submitted by Graham Kerslake and includes construction of an anaerobic digestion plant comprising a digester and two large tanks, five storage areas, preened post treatment equipment, provisions and vehicular access, infrastructure works, tree planting, landscaping and other associated works belonging to the Downes Estate at the end of the industrial estate.

Do you think the benefits of the site producing “green” energy outweigh the extra traffic, pollution, noise and smell often associated with anaerobic digesters?

What you told us …

I suppose it’s an essential part of today with regard to recycling, but I would question the position of the site at Lords Meadow Industrial Estate, it’s far too close to the town. It concerns me that the large lorries and tractors and trailers will be going to and from the site adding to the congestion we already have. There are better sites, more suitable than the site at Lords Meadow.

I think it’s awful that they’ve given planning for the biomass plant. It will increase the traffic going through Exeter Road as people will avoid the link road with extra tractors and trailers using it. Exeter Road is already busier because of all the houses being built in the area. It’s unsafe and is very hard to cross the road. The traffic won’t give way and allow pedestrians to cross.

The problem with most green energy is what it costs to produce and it’s a waste of money especially with wind farms that aren’t working half the time. The whole idea of the link road was to ease traffic along Exeter Road not to increase it. It’s just going to cause more pollution and the lorries seem to have got much bigger. No one ever takes into account the people who already live in the area. Was the decision made in Tiverton? - They never do what's best for Crediton, they never have.
