DID the people who set fire, burnt and ruined five poppy wreaths at the Crediton Town and Hamlets War Memorial think it was fun? Bonfire night is November 5 and I will pay for those who did it to attend an official Bonfire Night celebration next year. I sold those poppy wreaths and people paid a lot of money for the them. I just went up this morning (Monday) to lay a wreath for a soldier killed in action at El Alamein in the Western Dessert in 1942. He left a wife and son and daughter. If the people who set fire to the wreaths realised that the servicemen who served in the First and Second World Wars, Aden, Burma, Borneo, Africa (including my father), Afghanistan, Iraq and all the other wars, did it so they could be free, perhaps they would realise the sacrifice they made. Many injured men make the poppies and wreaths and hundreds of people organise and sell the poppies. I hope the young people who did this will one day come and join the Royal British Legion and help us all in Crediton to make up for the upset they have caused. I am very upset by it all.
