A CELEBRATION of the Ukrainian Christmas and New Year, which took place at the Crediton Congregational Church on Saturday, January 14, was well-attended.
The event was organised by local Ukrainian guests living with their host families in the wider Crediton and Exeter areas as a “thank you” to their hosts and the Church, which provides space for the weekly drop-in sessions. With the backdrop of a film showing the wonderful and varied Ukrainian countryside and the soundtrack of popular Ukrainian music, the group gave a superb performance of song, dance and a popular play.
Both guest and host children showcased their talents by singing in front of the large audience and providing musical scores on the piano. They then took part in activities organised by one of the mums, including decorating home-baked gingerbread figures.
A huge and delicious spread of traditional food was supplied by the guests and welcomed by all present. No-one was left in doubt what a family celebration must be like in their homes.
David Nation thanked the guests for the fabulous entertainment on behalf of the Crediton for Ukraine Support Group and expressed everyone’s hope for peace and the restoration of all of Ukraine to its people.
He added that it was humbling to receive thanks from the people who have gradually arrived in Devon from the war-torn country during the last 11 months, saying it was apparent how much the help and support received both locally and nationally was appreciated.
If people are interested in supporting the group, meeting local guests and finding out more, there is a drop-in café every Monday between 4pm and 6pm at Crediton Congregational Church.
