GARAGE owner Christopher Copeland, of Dulings Meadow, Copplestone, who has been accused of stealing thousands of pounds in bogus Help for Heroes charity collections, has appeared at Exeter Crown Court facing two fresh charges. Copeland (51), has denied the theft of £3,050 from Stephen George between November 2012 and August 2013 and £1,500 from Barry Flounder between March and August last year. In the other case he is alleged to have concealed £518,397, proceeds of criminal conduct between April 2009 and September 2011. He is alleged to have organised street collections for Help for Heroes for two years and kept the money for himself. In that case he denies 14 counts of fraud, each relating to different periods between September 7, 2009 and July 8, 2011. Each count alleges he "dishonestly obtained cash by falsely representing to the general public that he was collecting money on behalf of Help for Heroes". He is due to be tried in July after denying 14 counts of fraud and one of money laundering which relate to his alleged charity collections. He denied two fresh charges which do not relate to the existing case and which are likely to be tried separately later this year. Copelander, which specialised in four-wheel drive off-road vehicles, was set up by Chris Copeland at Morchard Road in the summer of 2010.
