IT was a great Christmas for two turkeys at Yeoford!
For several weeks the turkeys have roamed the village, much to the amusement of local residents.
The pair visited many residents’ gardens and even made a guest appearance at Yeoford Community Primary School’s outdoor end-of-term assembly.
Staff at the primary school captured on camera an image of the turkeys perched on a wall watching proceedings.
The school took to social media afterwards, sharing a lovely image of the turkeys on the wall and stating: "Look who joined us for our final assembly of the term!
"Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas from all at Yeoford Primary School."
While most local residents have found it amusing to receive a visit from the turkeys, a few residents have not been best pleased as the turkeys pecked away at precious plants and roosted in plant pots!
The first social media posting about the turkeys was posted on to the Yeoford Hub page on December 13 when they were found in a garden in Yeoford. The house owner was told that they wander free range with the pheasants on a local shoot and would probably make their way back to the pen.
But that did not happen. They seemed to like being part of the village and moved on to a house further up the road on the way out of Yeoford.
The village pub, The Duck, was advertising take-away Christmas dinners that included turkey breast and leg, but not from those two because they turned up again three days later with a post on December 16 when a different home owner, and gardener, did not welcome them and tried chasing them down the road.
But they returned and another post on December 23 made the comment: “I do hope that the stupid idea of free ranging turkeys won’t continue!
“If it wasn’t enough that we have to contend with natural pests, marauding squirrels, deer and rabbits we now have turkeys wreaking havoc, pecking buds and flowers off, pulling out labels and turning over pots.”
The good news, however, is that the turkeys escaped ending up on a plate on Christmas Day and can still be seen roaming people’s gardens at Yeoford.
