TO his credit - and his embarrassment - one gardener at Spreyton took home a box full of trophies from this year’s Spreyton Flower Show.

As well as several trophies for gaining most points in the different sections, Cleave Collins also grew what was judged as the best exhibit in the whole show, three red and orange cactus dahlias.

Entries were up on last year at 518 with the quality being good and Spreyton Village Hall looking a picture on Saturday, August 18.

The judges said that the standard of the preserves was better than some other big shows and had much impressed them.

Trophies were presented by Tony Talbot, chairman of Spreyton Village Trust and president of the flower show. Proceeds were in aid of the RNIB, Cancer Research UK and Spreyton Village Trust funds.

New exhibitor Lorraine Crosfield took the sweet pea trophy. She has lived in the village for two years.

Cups won by Cleave were for the exhibitor with most points, the resident gaining most points, the residents’ vegetable cup and the residents’ flower cup, plus the shield for gaining most points in the classes for resident’s vegetables and flowers and the cup for most points in the wine classes.

Cleave and Jack Brand shared the open cup for gaining most points in the open vegetable classes.

Cleave also tied with John Endacott and Ian Pinwill for gaining most points in the open flowers section.

Martha won the Junior Cookery cup. Angela Hawkins won the cup for most points in the preserves section and she tied with Judith Talbot for the cookery cup.

Wendy Sincock won the RNIB salver for most points in the craft and flower arranging classes.

Among the special prizes, Jack Brand and John Endacott won with their tomatoes. Trish Konig won for her plant in a pot and the rose bowl for preserves with her chutney. Her Victoria sandwich also took a prize.

Belle Rickard won with her fruit cake, Lorraine Crosfield for her flower arrangement on a spoon. Cleave Collins won the Eve Collins decanter for a non-alcoholic drink.
