THE death has been announced of a former chairman of Mid Devon District Council.

Councillor John Daw (71), from Morchard Bishop, passed away yesterday January 9.

John was first elected to the council in 1999 and held a number of roles across a range of committees during more than 20 years on the council.

He was Chairman of the Council from 2015-17.

Chief Executive Stephen Walford said: "John was Chairman of the council when I joined Mid Devon back in 2016 and I had the pleasure of spending time with him at various civic ceremonies and events during his Chairmanship.

“As a new Chief Executive, John always put me at ease, having the gravitas of an experienced, respected and well-liked councillor, while also retaining good grace and humour, together with a grounded sense of community service that garnered respect from right across the council chamber.

"The flag is flying at half-mast today and a Book of Condolence has been opened at the reception of Phoenix House.

"Our sincere condolences to his wife Marilyn, his family, and to all those who knew him."

Mr Daw (71), was a dairy farmer from Morchard Bishop and Coldridge.

He was actively involved with Devon YFC, the NFU, ARLA, Devon County Show, Mid Devon Show and was a director of Mole Avon Trading Ltd.

He was chairman of Coldridge branch of the Conservative party.In a statement, Crediton Rugby Club said: "We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of John Daw."Having played for the club, John then held a number of positions over the years and was an active member of the committee."He will be missed and our thoughts are with Marilyn, Richard and all the family at this time."

Linda Bealey of North Devon took to “Facebook” to pay tribute to Mr Daw, calling him an “icon” of the Devon agricultural community.

She also spoke about the recent death of North Devon farmer Albert Cook.

Linda said: “I cannot believe it. Two of our most honourable ‘icons’ of the Devon Agricultural community have passed away.

“First I heard of Albert Cook and now John Daw.

“Two of the loveliest genuine, honest, supportive and well-liked individuals who have done so much for both agriculture and YFC… such a legacy they have both left to so many people.

“My thoughts and love are with their families at this sad time. RIP :-( .”
