IN reply to C Turner's letter (Trees idea is a retrograde step, Crediton Courier, August 8) regarding the placement of trees in the High Street, I say it will be very much a step in the right direction, albeit a small one. His or her notion that removing parking spaces will reduce the number of people using High Street shops is simply wrong. It has been proven, time and again, in transition cities and towns such as Crediton that giving back space from parking to pedestrians, cyclists and greenery leads to much more foot traffi c to shops and an increased desire for customers to spend time and money in the town. It can be seen in his or her example of the town square where, since parking spaces have been removed and replaced by open space and trees, the surrounding businesses have fl ourished this summer with customers of the cafes and pub overflowing into the green public spaces. I am happy to see Crediton considering introducing more ideas aimed at improving the look and feel of the town for its residents and the public and I hope this and many more ideas like it go head in the future.
