SIR Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous mystery “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is to come to the stage in a new Crediton Arts Centre production.

Retaining much of Conan Doyle’s narrative thrust, this lively, gripping show can be seen from 25th to 28th March at the Arts Centre.

Sir Charles Baskerville’s mysterious death in the grounds of Baskerville Hall brings Holmes and Watson to the scene of one of their most famous and intriguing cases – the mystery of the legendary hellhound of Dartmoor.

In 1901 Conan Doyle visited Devon; driven by chauffeur (one Henry Baskerville) on a tour which included Grimspound, Dartmoor Prison and Foxtor Mire.

He also came upon the legend of Squire Richard Cabell of Brook Hall.

Described as a "monstrously evil man", Cabell was said to have sold his soul to the devil.

He died in 1677 and the night of his burial apparently brought a phantom pack of hounds baying across the moor to howl at his tomb.

Inspiration enough to inspire this most popular Sherlock Holmes story.
