NEWTON St Cyres Cricket Club is hosting a weekend of cricket, community action and entertainment in preparation for the beginning of the 2009 cricket season.
Run in conjunction with Nat West Bank's Cricket Force 2009 campaign, the coming weekend (April 4/5) is a chance for people to get involved with this lively and welcoming cricket club, regardless of whether they would like to play cricket or not.
Club Chairman James Chubb explains: "It is important that the club remains an integral part of the local community and to do that we have to offer more than just cricket matches. As a club we want to be more than just 11 guys who get together to play cricket on a Saturday. We want to be a focus for social and community life."
From 2pm on Saturday, April 4, in return for a little elbow grease, the club will be providing food and entertainment while a few pre-season jobs are addressed.
"The list of odd jobs that require attention at the start is always growing," explained James.
"But none are onerous and the more people we can attract with the offer of food and drink, the more fun we will have on Saturday afternoon.
"If people can spare a few hours to get stuck in; great. In the evening there will be a Clubhouse Quiz at 8pm to pit your wits against. The quiz may be compiled by a cricketer, but there will be a wide range of categories to test your general knowledge.
Teams of up to five people, with a charge of £5 per team, will compete for a cash prize.
On the Sunday (April 5) a Kwik Cricket competition will be run for youngsters interested in taking part in this great game.
The cricket club has a burgeoning youth section and new players and their families are encouraged to come along and join in.
