PEOPLE unable to attend the Stop Trident demonstration in London on February 27 will stage a small demonstration in Crediton in support of the big march.
Pat Barker and Linda Lever did not feel up to a long march through London and they are inviting people who oppose the renewal of Trident nuclear weapons and can’t get to London, to join them at St Lawrence Green at 10.45am on Saturday, February 27, and invite them to attend with appropriate placards.
These can say what they think £100 billion should be spent on instead of new nuclear submarines and weapons.
After the demonstration they will walk down Crediton High Street to the Town Square, giving out leaflets.
Pat (82), said: “It is wicked to spend all that money on weapons that can never be used when the NHS urgently needs more funding and refugees, especially women and children, are desperate for our support.”
Linda (75), also considers renewing Trident and increasing our stockpile of nuclear weapons to be immoral.
She said: “International law prohibits the use of these indiscriminately destructive weapons. Polls show that the majority of the public is against Trident renewal.
"Even military figures and the former Conservative Chair of the Defence Select Committee are against. Our country should be taking a lead in decreasing the number of nuclear weapons in the world, not increasing them.
"How much better to spend the money on insulating homes for those in fuel poverty and combating climate change, which is a real and immediate threat to all of us”.
