IT would appear that some people will steal anything – even a patch of grass!

Two weeks ago a bare patch of earth suddenly appeared at the back of Beacon Park, at the top of George Hill, Crediton.

Local councillor, David Nation, told the Courier, about the odd theft.

He said: "I can only assume that someone wanted some turf for their garden and decided to get it from Mid Devon District Council!

"I checked with the council and it was not done officially!

"It is sad that someone has scarred an otherwise really attractive park and put the council to the expense and trouble of having to put it right.

"I know hanging baskets get nicked occasionally but stealing someone's lawn is a new one!"

Mid Devon District Council open spaces manager, Adrian Cook, told the Courier: "This area of turf has been removed without the District Council's permission and I assume that it was taken by a local resident for their garden.

"The damaged area will be soiled and seeded this autumn to return it to its original condition."

He added that if anyone has information regarding this incident, can they please contact him at Mid Devon District Council on 01884 234339.

Crediton Police have also been investigating the unusual theft and anyone with any information is asked to contact Crediton Police Station on 08452 777444.
