NOW held on the second Saturday of each month instead of the third, Zeal Monachorum local market this month was celebrating spring.

Every month Jan and Alan Summers run a stall in aid of Hospiscare and North Tawton Bowling Club, raising several hundred pounds each year.

Also this month, Isabel Harris had a packed stall for Red Nose Day which raised £165. She had also devised a quiz all about Zeal, which was also available at the Waie Inn.

Isabel thanks all those people who generously donated raffle prizes and spent so generously at the stall and thanks go to The Waie Inn and Village Hall Coffee Morning for selling the quiz sheets.

There were joint winners of the quiz. Jan and Tony Brealy and Debbie Stericker, with help from her grandaughter Issy. They all kindly donated back their winnings.

There were also joint winners of “Name the Famous Faces” - Jan and Tony Brealy, Rhonda Janowski and Simon Allanson-Bailey, each winning an Easter egg.

Guess the Name of the Teddy (Gordon) was won by Margaret Denham and Guess how many Sweeties on the Cake (222) was won by Jan Hollingsworth with 221.

Helping Isabel with the stall was her sister-in-law Margaret Harris. Along with the competitions they were selling lovely home-made cakes including chocolate buns with “Maltesers” on top.

Jan and Alan Summers are both volunteers, serving in the Hospice shop as well as other fundraising. They have been running the stall at Zeal for three years, taking it over from someone else who baked.

Jan sells her home-baked goods as well as jams, preserves, curds and chutneys she makes.

Both are members of North Tawton Bowling Club, Jan being club vice Captain. The new season begins on April 22, also the opening of the new clubhouse.

Jan said they were hoping that as many people who have given towards the building either time or in other ways will return that day.

It would be helpful if people could contact club chairman, Mike Thwaites, if they were going, 01837 82 543.

Looking towards sowing and cropping, Margaret Harris was handing out seed potatoes for people to grow in a bucket for weighing at the Village Hall Summer Show this summer. Margaret is show secretary.
