HAIR TODAY! Cheriton Bishop and Tedburn St Mary Young Farmers' Club held a disco at Spreyton Village Hall on Friday, January 29.
It was also a special occasion for them and also for Roger Cudlip, landlord of the Tom Cobley Tavern.
Many of the members of the club are from the Spreyton area, some were in the pub enjoying a drink last autumn and had a chat with Roger. They were raising funds for the coming year, for Country Holidays for Inner City Kids (CHICKS).
As Roger has always been very interested in raising funds for well-known charities he said he would remove his moustache providing the club could raise £1,000. This offer was accepted and fundraising started that evening - with £250 raised in the bar before closing time.
With the amount raised it was suggested removal of the moustache should take place during a disco.
It was removed by a special local lady, Wendy Sincock, who had a kidney transplant a few years ago.
Roger said his moustache raised a total of £1,350, some of which will go to his chosen charities, Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Exeter Kidney Unit at the R D and E Hospital and the Exeter Transplant Games. Another £2,000 or more was raised by the club during 2008 and 2009.
Roger has always been very enthusiastic with fundraising ideas at local events and charities. On this occasion the club took full advantage of his generous offer, for which the club is very proud.
Local produce market. Some locals have joined together with the proposed launch of a local market similar to those held in other parishes.
It is proposed to hold the first one in the village hall on Saturday, March 6 from 10am until 12noon.
About 20 stalls have already been booked for that date, including produce, crafts, local meat, cakes, pottery and many others.
More details nearer the time.
Depending on its success, it is proposed to repeat the market on the first Saturday of each month.
Service. Because of weather conditions during January it was only possible for two services to be held at St Michael's Church.
The first was an afternoon Holy Communion. However, with the cold conditions, the attendance was not too encouraging. The service was conducted by the Rev Noel Walter.
The normal fifth Sunday service has always been a joint one with the local Methodist Church.
This was again held in the afternoon. Again, early morning light snowfall did not help to swell the congregation.
The Rev Noel Walter conducted the service with Shirley Gillard the organist.
Lessons were read by Douglas Endacott from the Methodist Church and John Williams from Spreyton.
There were enough ringers to ring at both services.
At the end of the latter service tea, coffee and biscuits were provided by Judith Talbot assisted by John Williams.
The next Service will be on Sunday, February 7 at 4.30pm with the Rector, Preb Anthony Geering, presiding.
Ringing. The joint monthly ring with the Winkleigh team took place on the first Tuesday in February at St Michael's Church.
Afterwards, all ringers and friends enjoyed mince pies and cream with tea or coffee. This was organised by Jane Lott and Elizabeth Daw of the local team and was a late Christmas ring due to the January weather conditions.
