AN enjoyable evening was held in Sandford Square, with parishioners joining from their doorsteps, or socially distancing, in the Square to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

It was not the Grand Event Sandford had been planning since January but everyone had time to remember the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and at the same time another page for the Parish Records was turned.

Malcolm Valance, parish clerk, explained: "The parish Boogie Box played live radio music before and after the Speech from the Queen, broadcast at 9pm and Nick, landlord of ’The Lamb’ dispensed takeaway drinks.

"The Lamb was decorated with Union flags and World War Two posters.

"And as we all returned to our homes I felt it had been an opportunity for an hour to take our minds off the current emergency crisis we are going through.

"Many thanks to all who attended for their support and no doubt later in the year there will be an opportunity to get the flags out again to remember VJ Day and the happier days that lie ahead.

"We were joined during the evening by Michael Lee and Dougie Daw, who as 13-year-old lads had been present in Sandford Square 75 years ago for the 1945 Celebration of VE Day!

"The memory for the day was well summed up in something I read: ’After the partying had stopped on the morning of May 9, 1945, the attention turned to how to build a better, fairer nation.’

"When the coronavirus has subsided we too must start the work of creating a country we can be proud to hand on to the next generation."
