SHOBROOKE Friendly Club had its inaugural meeting on July 20, 1981.

The Committee decided that the Summer Cream Tea planned for August should in fact be treated as an anniversary celebration.

At the inaugural meeting Hubert Fernbank was appointed as Chairman, with Mrs C Elstone, Secretary and Mr Hulland, Treasurer.

Hubert Fernbank is the only survivor of the original committee. Mr Fernbank resigned as a member of the Club three years ago.

As he is the only survivor of the original committee it was decided that he should be invited to attend the cream tea as guest of honour along with Mrs Barbara Woodford the Club’s President, who now lives near Bath.

Unfortunately Mrs Woodford was unable to attend due to another appointment, and Mr Fernbank owing to ill health.

Nevertheless 28 members and friends from Crediton attended.

Following a quiz in the form of Family Fortunes, and a picture round based on proverbs, organised by Margaret and Norman Gale, the tea was prepared by Eileen James, David and Jacqui Lee and Margaret Gale. This consisted of various quiches followed by scones, cream and jam.

Further light entertainment was provided by Jacqui Lee reading a couple of poems, one she had composed herself, and a few jokes from Jack Fey.

Following this, a draw took place with the prizes being donated by members of the Club.?Mrs Barbara Paddon, a Club Member, thanked the Committee for providing such a good afternoon.

The next meeting of the Club will be on September 21 and will be an outing to Padstow.

Anyone wishing to go on this trip should contact Margaret Gale on 01363 773282 for further details. The fare will depend on the actual number going.
