FOLLOWING on from a successful Heritage Open Day in mid-July Crediton Parish Church, which is Grade I listed, and considered to be one of the finest parish churches in the country, is opening its doors for a second time on Saturday, September 10, from 11am to 3pm.
Visitors are encouraged to go along and perhaps ask all those questions they have never got around to asking.
Questions about the maintenance challenge presented by the building, which largely dates from the 13th and 15th centuries and is built on a massive scale for a Devon parish church will be especially welcome. Local experts will be available.
There are many treasurers at the church, monuments of national importance, a fine peal of 12 bells, a Harrison and Harrison organ and many smaller items of local and regional importance.
Access will be available to areas of the church not normally open with bell tower tours at 11.30am and 1.30pm and tours to the Governors Room on the top floor of the chapter house at 11am, 12.15pm and 2pm.
A selection of short audio visual presentations will be available throughout the day along with copies of a new Children’s Heritage Trail around the town which is being launched on the September 10.
The Heritage Trail, which is two miles in length, begins at Crediton Railway Station and finishes at the Parish Church.
Copies of the Trail will be available at the church or can be downloaded from www.creditonhistorytrail.moonfruit.com .
Admission to the Heritage Open Day will be free, but donations would be appreciated for the Devon Historic Churches Trust.
Light refreshments, toilets and parking will all be available.
For more information or to book a place on the timed tours please contact Bill Jerman on 01363 772865.
Further Heritage Open Days will be held at Crediton Parish Church in 2017 on dates yet to be decided.
