CREDITON Boniface Rotary Club was founded in 1993. The majority of the eight founder members still belong, but in those days meetings were held in the old Rosemont Hotel.
Being full of enthusiasm and energy, the new club members were keen to get involved in community-based projects because that's what Rotary does.
So, within a few weeks, a simple coffee morning was organised and held in the old Crediton Club premises in Francis Court and a total of £140 was raised.
It was decided to do something for senior citizens. An oak seat was purchased and placed in Western Road, outside the hospital, to provide a bit of comfort for people waiting for buses or whatever.
The club was very proud of its first project. The Listers SEAT was suitably engraved and fixed against the wall outside Western Lodge. Over the years hundreds, if not thousands, of people have benefited from its presence.
About 10 years ago it was vandalised but was capable of being restored and from time-to-time since then a little bit of tender loving care has been given to it.
A few weeks ago one of the club members noticed the seat had been ripped from its usual location overnight and had ended up on the opposite side of the road.
The matter was reported to Past Club President and master joiner Steve Rowe, who had the seat repaired, re-varnished and restored to its proper location.
Within a couple of days, however, the seat was again vandalised but this time beyond repair.
I am sure Crediton Police would like to hear from anyone who could help identify whoever was responsible.
The reason that Boniface Club members still continue to bother is that they care about Crediton and its people. Over the years, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised by club members for local charities and despite the mindless actions of a few, members will continue doing what they do and yes, the chair will be replaced!
