THE annual Morchard Bishop Gardening Club’s Flower and Produce Show was held, as usual in the Memorial Hall, on September 1.

The standard of entries was very high considering the very dry weather during the crucial months of May, June and July but the fact that the number of entries was down gives an indication that only the keenest gardeners were able to cope with the adverse conditions.

Before awarding the prizes the Club Chair, Lynda Wright, thanked the Show Secretary Richard Jackson for all his hard work throughout the year in organising it, and presented him with a bottle of wine.

The adult prizewinners were remarkable for being most unusually all ladies with the sole exception of Stuart Mackay who won the best wine competition.

The Morchard Cup went to Veronica Hammett for gaining the most points in the vegetable section. The Bowden Cup was won by Sarah Yendell for the most points in the flower section.

The Chillingford Cup was won by Val Miles for the most points in the household and craft sections.  The Silver Anniversary Vase was awarded to Pat Wilding for the most points in the flower arranging section.

The Wheeley Memorial Challenge Cup for the most points in show resulted amazingly in a dead heat and was shared by Veronica Hammett and Val Miles.

There was also a similar result in the children’s sections where Ben Voaden and James Hill shared the Aish Cup for competitors aged seven years and under, and Sam Voaden and Jacob Hill shared the Aish Shield for most points in the eight to 14-year-old classes.

Tea and home-made cakes were served by hardworking volunteers, and the afternoon was rounded off by an auction of exhibits where some wonderful bargains were to be had of excellent produce and flowers.
