AN emergency Temporary Road Closure has been put in place in School Lane, Thorverton following reports of a potentially unstable wall.
The Thorverton Arms said on social media on Monday, January 19: “It is with regret that the Thorverton Arms will be closed until further notice.
“The gable end is at risk and collapsing.
“As tenants. Stonegate are dealing with the situation and supporting us.
“School Lane is about to be closed, so please feel free to use our car park and be advised by the school about alternative route to collect your children. Sincere apologies.”
Mid Devon District Council said on January 20 that officers from North and Mid Devon Building Control have carried out an assessment of the wall and are now determining what action needs to be taken.
It added: “At this stage it is not clear how long the road closure will be in place and while we understand it will cause a significant inconvenience, particularly to residents and those attending the primary school, it is a necessary step to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers in the area.
“We will be liaising closely with the owners of the building and the parish council and update residents when we have more details.”
Karl Wilson said on Facebook: “The tenants, Steve and Mandy Plumridge are devastated by this situation as we would all be if we were in their shoes, especially when they have worked so hard to turn the Thorverton Arms into a thriving village hub and pub in the last three years.
“I gather some parents and neighbours have been less than friendly today.
“Imagine if you were in the same predicament.
“Surely some humility and village support would be more appropriate during these hard times for the pub, the publicans and the local residents who have been affected.”
