AS a torrential downpour stopped and the sun came out at midday, so Judi Spiers started the Relay for Life at Tedburn St Mary.

Starting on July 4, the 24 hour Relay had an American theme. Cowboys, surfers, "Blues Brothers", and a host more, some with stars and stripes flags or sparkling hats.

There were lots of stalls, the car park was full, the sun carried on shining, the music poured out, food was served throughout including a barbecue, a hog roast and a chilli meal for the night time relay walkers.

A group of Tedburn School pupils presented the Guests of Honour, cancer survivors, with plants, Tedburn St Mary Judo Club gave demonstrations, Tedburn AFC U12s played Alphington and the U14s played St Martins from Exeter.

Later in the day Exeter City Legends played Tedburn Veterans. Dartline Majorettes strutted their stuff through the afternoon and into the evening, with music being provided by Justin Dawson, Dead Skunk Revival, Bath Samba Band and Freeway Split.

As it began to get dark, the Relay course was lit by candles, all in memory or celebration of a cancer sufferer.

Next morning there was a church service on the field with the Rev Martin Wood and the Rev David Gregory. Music was provided by Dead Skunk Revival again, plus folk music and the Matthius Band solo artist Matt Symons before the closing ceremony at midday.
