SERIOUS concerns regarding the proposed “Boniface Trail” cycle path from Crediton to Exeter have been raised by a Reform UK councillor.
Councillor Nat Vanstone, the Reform UK County Councillor for Broadclyst Division, told the Courier: “While the initiative may appear beneficial on the surface, I believe it raises significant questions about Devon’s long-term financial stability and environmental impact.
“The estimated construction cost of the project is around £8 million, which is currently covered by Government funding.
“However, there is no clear or confirmed plan for ongoing maintenance.
“Keeping the path in good condition will require regular investment from public budgets, which would ultimately fall on Devon’s taxpayers.
“Additionally, major works - such as bridge widening and land acquisition to avoid pinch points - could have a considerable impact on the local environment.

“Devon’s finances are already under strain. Before committing substantial resources to a single project, we must carefully weigh it against other essential priorities such as road safety, public services, and community support.
“The initial survey received 839 responses. While this feedback is valuable, it may not fully represent the views of the wider Devon community or reflect broader priorities across the county.
“At present, there is no confirmed funding for the ongoing maintenance of the trail. I have requested transparency on this matter, as it is crucial to understand the long-term financial implications before proceeding.
“It is also worth noting that there is already a rail link between Crediton and Exeter, as well as a vast network of quiet country lanes that connect the proposed route.
“These existing options should be considered when evaluating the necessity and value of the Boniface Trail.
“Financial Prudence Reform UK Councillors wish to ensure financial stability and prevent public funds from being wasted.
“A careful and responsible decision must be made.
“We should not rush into spending without a solid and sustainable plan.
“Confirming a detailed maintenance and delivery strategy is essential—especially in light of anticipated future funding cuts for Devon.
“I urge all involved to consider the long-term financial and environmental consequences of this project. My deepest concern lies in the forward funding of maintenance, and I believe this issue must be addressed to safeguard Devon’s financial future.”
Devon County Council’s Cabinet will decide which schemes to proceed with, including the Boniface Trail, on December 10.
It is also expected to say which route it prefers, a devoted cycle path alongside the A377 or one on quiet back roads.
Mid Devon Green Party is urging cyclists and local residents to lobby the councillors which make up the Cabinet before the day.
Sustainable Crediton said: “This is your chance to support a safe and viable cycle route to Exeter: please write!”
