DEEP SADNESS
The Mayor of Crediton, Councillor Liz Brookes-Hocking expressed her deep sadness on behalf of residents and offered sincere condolences to His Majesty The King and The Royal Family.
The national proclamation of the accession of King Charles III took place from 10am today, Saturday, September 10 at St James’ Palace, London.
The Proclamation of the new Sovereign is a very old tradition which can be traced back over many centuries.
It is the announcement of the accession which took place immediately on the death of the reigning Monarch.
In an age where modern methods of communication convey news around the globe in an instant, the proclamation is no longer the means by which people learn for the first time that they have a new Monarch.
The Proclamation will be one of the first occasions where our community has an opportunity to come together and reflect on the moment in our nation’s history when the reign of our longest-serving Monarch came to an end and our new Sovereign succeeded.
DEVON PROCLAMATION
The Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, as His Majesty’s representative, will be holding the official announcement of the new King at County Hall, Exeter, at 1.05pm tomorrow, Sunday, September 11.
The principle proclamation for Devon will be read by the High Sheriff of Devon, Richard Youngman.
The outdoor ceremony will be live-streamed to enable people to watch the proclamation from home or remotely, although members of the public are invited to attend in person.
The High Sheriff will be accompanied by the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, the Bishop of Exeter, representatives of other faiths, the Chairman of Devon County Council, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth and the Mayor of Torbay.
The ceremony will also include invited dignitaries.
Public visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to County Hall. People arriving by car will be invited to park in the visitors’ car park, accessed via the Topsham Road entrance to County Hall.
The proclamation is cascaded nationally from London.
The national proclamation was read first at Westminster this morning, Saturday, September 10.
Devon’s eight District/City/Borough Councils will host proclamations on Monday, September 12.
