A LADIES rugby match at North Tawton raised £2,000 to help a young man whose rugby career was cut short because of an accident.
Max Levene broke his C6 (the sixth cervical bone in his back) and is now a tetraplegic with limited movement above the chest and limited arm movement. The match was to help buy a special off-road wheelchair for Max. This would need to be custom-made and cost up to £3,000.
Denise Hodge from Cullompton, chairman of Devon Women's and Girls' Rugby, explained that she and a friend, Sue Garrad from London, had the idea for a fundraiser for Max. "I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people."
Max, who lives in Cornwall, was 17 and playing for Truro School last autumn when he was injured. He was taken to Derriford Hospital and then transferred to a specialist unit at Salisbury.
