PROFESSOR Stephen Lea of Exeter was the preacher on Sunday, October 4 at Crediton Methodist Church. The theme was "anyone who has two ears had better listen".

The family challenge was to build two towers using lego bricks – one on a small base and the other on a larger base – and those built on a larger base were taller and more stable.

Stephen explained the reading was from the Gospel of Thomas, which was written in Coptic on papyrus and found sealed in a jar in Nag Hammadi, in Egypt, in the 1940s.

It closely resembles the parable of the Tenants in Matthew’s Gospel, which says "the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone".

Stephen showed a photograph of the outside of the church and pointed out that the cornerstones formed the essential basis to hold the building together.

In the last hymn the words were "Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone". Christ should be the foundation of our lives.

The church was open and 20 people were able to watch and listen to the Worship on the Web through television screens.

Stephen was preaching live in the church.
