TIVERTON’S Morrisons store has submitted plans to put four EV charging points in its petrol station.
The proposal for its Kennedy Way store will mean eight cars can charge their batteries at the site.
The scheme has been submitted by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), which owns Morrisons’ petrol forecourts and signed a partnership with the grocer in 2024 that includes a focus on expanding EV charging.
At the time, MFG said it was targeting the installation of 800 Ultra-Rapid 150kW EV chargers within the first five years alone. These chargers can add 100 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes.
CarneySweeney, MFG’s agent for the planning application for the Tiverton store, said the UK government had set a goal of installing 300,000 public chargers by 2030, but that the latest figures as of January this year show just 87,796 installed.
“At the current pace, just 116,196 would be installed by 2030, with the target of 300,000 not being met until 30 years later,” the agent said.
“To meet the target in time, 13,263 chargers would need to be installed each quarter between now and 2030 – approximately a 650 per cent increase over build rates”.
In total, MFG operates more than 900 sites, making it the largest independent forecourt firm in the UK.

The plans will be considered by Mid Devon District Council, but no date has been set for when a decision will be given.
