WINKLEIGH Fair dates back 754 years and this year’s week-long event takes place from Saturday, July 9 to Saturday, July 16 with lots planned, from a quiz evening to a vintage vehicle gathering.

Saturday, July 9 sees the Clay Shoot on the Sports Field from 1pm to 5pm. Last year this event saw lots of people who had never held a gun before go along to “have a go”?

To give people that opportunity was fantastic and the highlight of the day. At the same time there were those who used to shoot and enjoyed showing off!

Due to the success of this event organisers aim to keep it the same and encourage more people to go along and have a go.

Later that day there will be a Quiz in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Entry is £5 per person to include a Ploughman’s supper. To book a table please telephone Sian on 01837 682820.

Sunday, July 10 sees the official opening of the Fair and proceedings start in The Square at 2.15pm. The Tarka Pipe Band has been invited back to play as the well is dressed and to accompany everyone to the church.

After the service everyone will take a few moments to remember that this is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest campaign of the First World War, with almost 60,000 British casualties in one day.

The pipes will play a Lament and flowers will be laid at the Commonwealth War Graves in the churchyard.

Following this Joseph Whittick and Anna Crome will be crowned Fair King and Queen.

From 4pm a Car Treasure Hunt will commence from The Kings Arms (last registration is at 5pm). It is always good fun and a great event that all the family can enjoy. Entry is £5 per car.

Tuesday, July 12 the Dog Show will take place in the Community Centre at 6pm. This event is another firm favourite, and refreshments will be available.

A Vintage Vehicle and Classic Car Gathering will be held in The Square on Wednesday, July 13 from 7pm to 9pm.

The last three years have seen the square taken over by tractors, buses, cars and bikes. This year it is hoped even more will go along. The Square and South Street will be officially closed from 6pm to 9pm.

Thursday, July 14 sees a Sponsored Knit “Wright and Proper” from 2pm to 3pm. Take your DK wool, some size nine needles and help raise money for Breast Cancer Now and Winkleigh Fair.

Later that day a Family Bingo will be held in the Community Centre with doors opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Meat and fruit hampers can be won.

At 7.30pm on Friday, July 15 a Whist Drive will be held in the Village Hall and to end the week, on Saturday, July 16, Fair Saturday starts at 12 noon and ends at approximately 11pm.

There will be a bouncy castle, circus skills, trapeze hoop, arts and crafts, face painting, glitter tattoos, an acrobatic show and much more to do.

Food will be available all day and the fantastic Stillyano will play out the evening from 8.30pm to 11pm.
