AN out of control bonfire caused a serious fire at Rackenford near Witheridge.

Just after 11.30pm on Saturday, May 23, fire crews from Witheridge, South Molton and Tiverton were mobilised to attend a building on fire with vehicles inside.

Many members of the public reported a large outbuilding on fire at the location.

On arrival, the Incident Commander confirmed that an outbuilding containing several vehicles was well alight and requested the attendance of another fire appliance from Tiverton and two water carriers from Barnstaple and Danes Castle Station in Exeter.

Crews eventually put out the fire using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, compressed air foam, covering jets and small tools.

Thermal imaging cameras and scene lighting were also used. Water was transported to the incident using water bowsers and a dam.

The fire caused severe damage to several vehicles and DIY tools, along with approximately 15 metres of hedgerow and logs.
