THERE were 30 more entries than last year at Sandford Flower and Produce Show, held on August 28.
It was a truly wonderful show with some superb exhibits in all classes. Sandford School put on a display of colourful collages, which attracted a lot of attention.
Top trophy winners were: the Crooke Cup for Most points in the Show and a gift voucher went to Dave Friendship, who also won the Cann Cup for Most points in the Vegetable and Fruit sections, plus the award for the Best Zinnias.
Dave then took the Garden News Shield for Most points in classes for those resident in Sandford.
Dodie Huxters superb basket of vegetables won her the Adams Home Hardware gift voucher.
Beautiful floral art exhibits by Dulcie Oliver won her both the Shield for most points in the floral art section and also the Cup for the Best Exhibit.
John Crook also won three trophies and vouchers for Most points in the Flower and Dahlia Classes and the cup for the Best exhibit with three cream dahlias, plus an award for his six tomatoes.
Beryl Wright won the award for her fruit cake in the cookery section and Angela Hawkins took home the Rose Bowl for most points in the cookery classes. Lorna Cheriton won the cup for most points in the homecraft section.
A magnificent orchid won Margaret Tucker the Parish Shield for Best Pot Plant and Peter Scrage won the Meadowside Cup for the heaviest pumpkin.
In the photography classes, Charlie Werner won both the Cup for Best Photograph and Most points in the section.
In the children’s classes, brothers, Marley (4) and Cassius Evens (6), won both trophies.
In the allotment section Richard Houlston received the Conibear Challenge Cup for having the Best Kept Allotment in the village.
Richard, who is 69, still works full-time for Hayes and Howe on Lords Meadow Industrial Estate, but still finds time to till not just one allotment but three.
He grows many vegetables plus everything for salads. Richard offers his vegetables, just for donations, which he uses to support three children in Uganda, to pay their school fees.
He has been to Uganda, but has not, as yet, met the three children. For a number of years Richard ran the local Scout group.
Runner-up for the best kept allotment was Dave Friendship, in third place were Paul and Judith Ezard and Highly Commended were Sue and Jerry Freeman.
Judges were Peter Cole, Bert Jewell, Margaret Harris, Angela Searle, Una Hobbs, Mr and Mrs Elliott and Mo Turner.
