A NORTH Tawton father and son have won places on the England team which will compete at the World Kickboxing Championships in Canada in October.

Richard Nye, and his son, George, qualified at a championship event in Manchester on February 26.

George (13), who gained a silver medal at the 2010 World Championship, won his first fight in the Under 50kg cadets class in Manchester.

He successfully knocked down his opponent for the count with a great right hook and head kick.

He then faced his rival from 2010, the former World Champion going out to the stronger older fighter in the semi-final, gaining a well-earned bronze to earn a place on the team.

Last year George faced the disappointment of not going to the World Championship despite qualifying; the England team was pulled from the event due to a lack of funds.

Richard only started kickboxing nine months ago, despite years of watching and supporting George.

He entered in the veteran's section (for those aged 42 years plus).

After just two months training, Richard (46), faced the World silver medalist in the World Kickboxing Championships All British competition.

He knocked down his opponent for an eight count in the first minute then went through to the final after some good combinations, in total knocking him to the floor three times to win gold and take the All British title in his age group.

Richard and George train four times a week in Exeter.

They have installed a fully kitted-out gym at their home for extra training.

Richard and George would be pleased to hear from individuals, groups or businesses which could help them with sponsorship, big or small, to help them reach their costs of about £1,500 each to enable them to get to the World Championships.
