AT Newton St Cyres Young Farmers’ Clubs annual harvest supper held on Sunday, October 8, cheques were presented to four charities from fundraising by club members during the year.
This included £1,030 to Farms for City Children, £500 to Farming Community Network, £487 to Devon Air Ambulance Trust and £300 to Devon Freewheelers.
At the recent club AGM, Matt Crooke was appointed the new club chairman and Will Ayre as the club secretary.
Matt explained: “Members have been busy with a fun and full programme of events during the past year, most recently members were competing in speaking competitions including Call My Bluff, Just A Minute and Stock Judging.
“Members also enjoyed a visit to see the Quicke’s Farm dairy unit in Newton St Cyres.
“Currently members are busy preparing for the local carnivals and are decorating the float with the theme of ‘Rumble in the Jungle’.”
In November the club will be celebrating its 80th anniversary with a dinner and dance at the High Bullen Hotel, Chittlehamholt.
Guest speaker will be Matt Smith, a New Zealand sheep farmer living in Cornwall, the current sheep shearing world record holder.

A new members evening will be held on Tuesday, October 17 at Newton St Cyres Recreation Ground beginning at 8pm.
The evening will give new members a chance to get to know what Young Farmers’ is all about.
