PET boarding kennels have faced a crisis during the pandemic as they have been forced to stay open and provide a vital service with very little recognition and no financial support from government.

As a consequence, many have had to close or lay off staff. This comes at a time of a huge increase in pet ownership, creating the perfect storm.

As pet owners are going back to work, or booking overseas travel, the number of licensed establishments that can safely and securely house our furry friends are now reduced in number.

Added to this, puppies who have not been able to be socialised need the stimulus that is provided by a doggy day care facility.

Licenced kennels also offer the safety and peace of mind at a time when dog theft is on the rise.

Sarah Harrison, founder of the Good Kennel Guide, said: "If we lose boarding kennels businesses we will be left with a surge of animals being left at home, dumped or being sent to animal rescue centres, it might also mean that there is an uptick in illegal and unlicensed animal boarding.”

It’s against this background that Neil Manning has, together with his young family, decided to take the plunge and buy Lapford Lodge Kennels and Cattery at Lapford.

Neil has been working in the NHS for 17 years, most recently at Nightingale Exeter, and it was the devastation of the pandemic that gave him the impetus to move on and do something different.

Neil is no stranger to the animal world, he and his partner Jade are successful breeders of working cocker spaniels and both have diplomas in Kennel Management.

The kennels and new cattery are spacious and individually heated, with large runs and an outdoor play area.

The couple are offering Doggy Day Care as they know that a friendly sociable and secure dog that can run off excess energy is a happy dog.

They will be building their facilities for play, exercise and stimulation, and also offer a local pick up and drop off service.

With a new baby expected imminently, and potentially another litter of puppies, Neil will certainly have his hands full over the next few months!
