THE Mid Devon area of the Central Devon constituency Labour party has increased its membership by more than 40 per cent since the General Election in May, it was announced at a meeting of local Labour party members and supporters.

Those gathered at the meeting, held at Glebe Cottage, Down St Mary, agreed to form an official branch and discussed what form support for the Labour party might take.

Officers elected were: Mike Bartlett, chairman; Kim Woods, secretary; Claire Proietti, membership secretary; Jane Tizzard, treasurer; Justin Beament, press relations.

In addition it was agreed to hold regular meetings and to have speakers on topics such as education, health, benefits and allowances and other issues of importance to the local community, to inspire debate and action where appropriate.

The meeting decided that the new Mid Devon Labour Party would put forward candidates for the Mid Devon District and Crediton Town council elections in May 2011.

The next Meeting will be held in November, time, date and location to be confirmed.
