A LOVELY booklet World War One 1914-1918 Cheriton Fitzpaine at War has been published by the Friends of St Matthew’s Church in the village.
World War One, also know as the First World War or the Great War, lasted from July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918. Described as the “War to end all Wars”, its effects were felt in Cheriton Fitzpaine as everywhere else.
The booklet gives details of events that effected the whole country as well as locally and includes some of the fallen from the village and nearby villages.
There are photographs and copies of advertisements which advised caution including “Warning - Defence of the Realm. Discussion in public of Naval and Military matters may convey information to the enemy - Be on your Guard”.
One black and white photograph included shows a group of people who attended daily classes in cheesemaking, pictured outside the Ring of Bells pub.
The booklet is sold in support of the Friends of St Matthew’s Church, who work to preserve the Grade I Listed building for future generations. It is available at the church priced at £3 each which all goes to the upkeep of the church.
