CREDITON'S environmental group has changed its name to broaden its appeal and get its message across more effectively.
Members of Crediton Climate Action agreed at the group's AGM to change its name to Sustainable Crediton.
The group still regards climate change as a huge threat, but wants to draw attention to the many other aspects of its work.
At the meeting, held at the Boniface Centre, chairman Gerald Conyngham said: "Our main purpose is to look at how we can live together in an more sustainable way. We want to broaden our appeal in the town and give a more positive message.
"We are about more than just climate change. We are developing a different sense of community in Crediton in a way that will benefit our children and grandchildren."
In summarising the group's work over the past year, Mr Conyngham said: "We can be proud of what we have achieved."
The food and farming group has organised a garden share scheme, a seed swap event and is now seeking funding for a web directory of local produce.
The transport group has promoted public transport and campaigned for a cycle route between Crediton and Exeter. This is now the subject of a feasibility study.
The energy group last year staged a very successful event to showcase renewable energy systems in the Crediton area, and it plans a similar event in June.
After its high profile campaign to persuade shopkeepers to stop giving out plastic bags, the waste group is campaigning for more recycling. The women's environmental network held several events and now runs a shared allotment, and the education group and tree group have also been active.
CCA's biggest initiative of the year was the 350 event in the Town Square which attracted 300 people. The aim was to draw attention to the dangers of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
Mr Conyngham also praised the group's website and newsletter, which have spread its message to a wide audience.
