AT a meeting held on October 20 at Exeter’s Historic Guildhall working class people from a number of diverse communities spoke at a meeting entitled “Action Against Racial Abuse”.

They talked about their experiences and how the abuse has affected them – on the street and in their places of work, with some people afraid to leave their homes. Their accounts were both moving and powerful.

Listening to them were Exeter City Councillors, representatives from Devon County Council and Devon and Cornwall Police alongside Community Builders, InExeter and others who had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss how the issues raised might be better addressed.

It was agreed that there are no quick solutions and it was hoped that this was the beginning of a dialogue which will create a safer city for everyone.
