STAFF and pupils at Morchard Bishop Church of England Primary School were recently delighted to win the Crediton Library Summer Reading Challenge for the second year running.
Maggie Stewart, a Friend of Crediton Library, presented literacy teacher, Hilary Jones of Morchard Bishop Primary School with a shield for being the school with the highest percentage of Summer Reading Challenge finishers.
The Challenge, a national initiative by the Reading Agency and delivered in libraries across Devon, encourages children to read six books during the long summer holiday to help to prevent the trend for children’s reading skills to dip during the holidays.
This year’s theme "Mischief Makers" was inspired by the historic "Beano" comic, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
The children received stickers as they recorded the books they had read and when they completed the challenge they received a medal and a certificate.
Children from 26 local schools took part in the challenge set by Crediton Library and the percentage of finishers was worked out using their school roll so that no school was disadvantaged.
Morchard Bishop School won with 26 per cent of children at the school reading all six books and Yeoford Primary School came a close second with 22.5 per cent.
Devon-based charity Libraries Unlimited runs 50 libraries in Devon, including Crediton Library.
The Friends of Crediton Library raise funds to support the Reading Challenge as well as provide the library with items such as blinds, Lego and a projector. The group are always happy to welcome new members.
