WITH the weather becoming more uncertain, and unseasonal weather being a common occurrence, Crediton’s Town Team has been thinking about how it can offer people using the Town Square in Crediton some shelter from the weather.

The Town Team asked three local architects to work up some exciting new designs for Crediton and is seeking the views of the town’s people.

These designs were displayed in the Council Chamber for three days in June and at a consultation event held at the Boniface Centre on Tuesday, October 25.

There has so far been a whole mix of reactions to these designs from some people who loved them, to others who wanted nothing to be put on the square.

The Town Team says it feels that it is really important to listen to all the views of those who live and work in Crediton.

The public meeting on October 25 provided a second opportunity for people to see the design ideas for the square and hear from the architects and how they came up with these plans.

In addition, the Town Team asked Charlotte Turner, a local community artist, who for four years has led the designs for the High Street flags project, to develop ideas for new town entrance road signs.

These will be based on all the ideas collected from local people, and especially High Street traders who pitched their thoughts on what should be highlighted to visitors as they drive into the town.

The design ideas for weather shelter in the square, and the concepts for the road signs were both on display at the meeting.

The architects Nick Scott and David Treadaway, were there explaining their designs. The others had been completed by Eddie Holden.

Charlotte Turner was also there to discuss the road sign concepts.

The Town Team says all of the designs are concepts, not finished proposals, and as such are very much “work in progress”, so people are warmly invited to comment on the designs, talk with the designers and make suggestions.

Crediton Town Team points out that the current projects are design concept projects funded by the government’s High Street Innovation Fund via Mid Devon District Council.

It asks that people note that the concepts for the square are not planning applications requiring approval or disapproval: They are design concepts only –  not finished designs. They should be seen as work-in-progress which might (a) never come to fruition to (b) be viable, (c) turn out to be the very one – after which more technical designs would be completed.

• What do you think of the plans for a form of weather protection for events held on the town square? What do you think of the new Crediton town entrance road sign concepts?
