I READ, with disbelief, the article on page one of your last issue regarding the possible closure of the Mid Devon office in Market Street, Crediton and I echo completely everything that Gillian Ponsford said.
While it is appreciated that savings have to me made, I am sure that a more rational view should be taken.
In my opinion, Mid Devon District Council should be looking nearer home for some answers. At a recent meeting I attended at Phoenix House, Tiverton, I was shown around the various departments which gave me the opportunity to form an opinion, based on my experiences in the Army and a business career which spanned over 53 years.
I would suggest three options which I would urge our Crediton councillors, in particular, should examine.
Firstly, they should look very closely at the "Directives" and "Initiatives" that were introduced by the last Government and consider which are relevant to this area of the country, instead of following them slavishly.
I am sure this present administration would approve.
Secondly, a look at what functions could be devolved to the Crediton office. This is again in line with present thinking of letting people have more say in the running of their local authorities.
Thirdly, if all else fails, to consider how the office usage could be extended by perhaps offering services to the self-employed.
I imply no criticism of the staff at Tiverton but I have to say I could not work in the crowded open plan offices.
How they are able to concentrate with all that is going on around them I do not know.
I also wonder how much of the work they do is the result of the various ridiculous laws and directives that have been introduced over the last 13 years.
What I saw and heard during my visit, leads me to the conclusion that it was considerable.
