FROM street care to social housing, parks to public health, the numerous essential services provided by Mid Devon District Council will be brought to life when staff take part in a social media day on Tuesday, November 20.

They will be among thousands nationwide to post using the hashtag #OurDay, to give residents an insight into the numerous jobs councils do every day, from collecting rubbish and recycling, to safeguarding vulnerable people.

By the end of last year’s #OurDay just under 14,000 “Twitter” accounts had taken part, and the hashtag trended at number one on “Twitter” for the largest part of the day.

#OurDay has been organised by the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales.

The LGA is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they are up to as part of a 24-hour live social media day on the day, by using the hashtag #OurDay.

Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Environment Clive Eginton, said: “Every day our staff work tirelessly to provide residents with numerous services, many of which people may be unaware of.

“Councils aren’t just responsible for recycling and taking away residual waste, but for many essential services which keep our communities glued together, and #OurDay is a chance for residents to get a glimpse into the work we do in our communities.”
