THOSE who tend some of the best gardens and allotments in Crediton were rewarded for their efforts when the Mayor of Crediton presented the Crediton Town Council Floral Crediton Competition winners with their awards.

Cllr Frank Letch, assisted by the Mayoress, Mrs Natalia Letch, presented trophies and photographs to each of the winners.

Judges in the competitions were Syd Johnson and Tony Connell.

The judges offered gardening advice and spoke about the gardens and allotments they had visited.

Tony Connell said that after nine years as judge he would be unable to continue in the future as he has been accepted for Ordinand's Training towards eventual ordination in the priesthood with the Anglican Church.

As a token of thanks, Mr Connell was presented with a Crediton plate by the Mayor.

The Judge's Favourite and winner of the Best Allotment at Barnfield was Mr Colin Acott who grows with his wife, Joy, on their allotment, grapes, blueberries, flowers, tomatoes, peppers, apples, pears, cherries and plums.

Mr Letch praised all those who took part and said that he would be looking at altering the categories of classes for next year's competition.

The full results were: Best Small Garden/Patio - 1 Mrs Jenny Smith, 2 Marion and John Turner, 3, Joan Taylor; Best Large Garden - 1 Barry Shears (Hillbrow), 2 Alison Courtney, 3 Sarah Pressland/Paul Chanin.

Best Allotment - Exhibition Road - 1 Mr Verney, 2 Mr Talbot, 3 Mr Norah. Barnfield -1 Mr Acott, 2 Mr N Snell, 3 Mr Stewart. Moffat's Land - 1 Mr W Stevens. Judges Favourite - Mr Acott.
