AS the sun shone at the Farmers Market on Crediton’s Town Square on Saturday, July 2, Redvers Ramble, a new approximately four kilometre scenic walk around Crediton, was launched.

Traditionally-clad Town Crier, Kevin Payne, heralded this unique event by chiming his bell and addressing the crowd: “My Lords, Ladies, Walkers and Ramblers.”

He suggested the route might take one-and-a-half hours if strolling but considerably longer in the robes he was wearing!

After proclaiming the infinite variety of benefits available for a healthier lifestyle, he concluded in the customary manner: “God Save the Queen.”  “And the fish” retorted robustly the fish merchant.

Crediton’s Mayor, Councillor Frank Letch, spoke of the wonderful idea of walking for health and said that the work had been largely undertaken by Councillor Heather Sansom.

He would be walking the route shortly and hoped that the people of Crediton would do so too and report back to the council with their comments.

To the amusement of the onlookers, Cllr Letch declared: “The sun is shining on us today and all because of our Saint Boniface!”

Prebendary Nigel Guthrie related an appropriate quotation: “I have two doctors, my left leg and my right.”

He blessed the Ramble and gave thanks for the town and the beautiful countryside, the footpaths surrounding it, and those who maintain them.

He asked for the Lord’s blessing on this new initiative and on all who will walk the route, that they will find company and inspiration and their health be strengthened in mind, body and spirit.

Route maps are available from Crediton Town Council offices at the Council offices, Market Street, Crediton.

You will find that the map specifically suggests an anti-clockwise direction to eliminate any appreciable climbs.  The words “Redvers Ramble” are clearly marked on public footpaths,  which are mostly grass.

The council welcomes you to enjoy the health-giving properties of green open spaces, and at the same time soak up the magnificent views we have around our fine town of Crediton.
