WITH more entries than ever and a high standard, competition was high at Zeal Monachorum flower and produce show, held in the village hall.

A bit of fun was the competition for the most potatoes grown in a bucket. Top weight was shared by Marian Quick and Diane Bettoney with 4lbs 14oz. Runner up were the potatoes grown by Margaret Down of 2lb 3oz.

Trophies were presented by David Bettoney, chairman of the village hall committee who also auctioned spare produce after the show.

Martyn Down won the vegetable cup with Margaret Down (Beer) runner up and Isabel Harris in third place. Best in section were the spring onions grown from sets by Margaret Down (Beer).

Sue Down won top award for the flowers, Marian Quick being runner up and Margaret Down (Thorne) in third place. Best in section was the gladioli grown by Margaret Down (Beer).

Mr Bettoney said Zeal had lost a regular exhibitor with the death of Colin Tucker in December. He had lived at Burston with his wife, Jean.

Both had supported the show, Colin with his vegetables and Jean exhibiting flowers. Colin had won the Godeck vegetables cup eight times since 1993.
