TORRIDGE and Tavistock Liberal Democrats have selected Ashreigney Parish Councillor Steve Middleton as their candidate for the forthcoming Torridge District Council by-election.

Voters in Winkleigh, Ashreigney, Hollocombe and surrounding hamlets go to the polls on December 4 to elect a new representative on the Council after the resignation of Simon Newton.

Steve Middleton is well known as an active Parish Councillor with a deep understanding of local issues. Born and brought up locally, Stephen is a fourth-generation farmer whose family have farmed in Ashreigney for over a century.

He is someone who cares passionately about our countryside and rural communities, saying: “Winkleigh deserves thoughtful, community-led progress — not top-down decisions. I’m standing to make sure local people have a real say in our village’s future.”

Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, who was elected to represent the Winkleigh area on Devon County Council earlier this year, says: “I’ve known Steve for many years and worked with him on his farm.

“He knows Winkleigh and the surrounding area inside out because it’s always been his home — and he’s completely committed to standing up for our rural community. That means protecting what makes Winkleigh special while fighting for the investment and services we deserve.”

Steve’s priorities, if elected would be homes for local people, smarter, safer travel, and keeping the community safe and supported.

“Winkleigh has seen massive growth recently, with developments that haven’t been focussed on local needs. We need to prioritise affordable homes for those living or working locally, not speculative developments. I will back good design and green standards, so new builds fit Winkleigh’s character.

“We need to improve walking routes and work with county and parish councils for better public transport links. I will push for developers to fund community facilities and road safety measures.”

Other candidates standing are Michael Graham Jarvis (Reform) and Benjamin Moses Roth (Conservative and Unionist Party).
