I AM amazed that Crediton would even consider turning down an inward investment from Mid Devon District Council to enhance our leisure facilities - how many times have residents of this town complained that Crediton misses out in favour of money going to Tiverton?
In view of the high level of mis-information that seems to surround this issue, I attended the public consultation meeting to get the facts. I listened to the presentations by the badminton and Tai Kwon-Do groups.
Unfortunately they did not extend the same courtesy to Lee Chester of the Leisure Centre, who was heckled and insulted during his presentation.
What a shame this issue has become so divisive.
The development does not mean an end to sports at the Leisure Centre. The vast majority of Leisure Centre users, both adults and children, take part in other sports and activities and these will be positively enhanced by the development!
I understand that negotiations are under-way with the QE Academy to accommodate Queen's Badminton Club and open their courts for public use.
I also understand that the original plans for development were altered and can now accommodate Tai Kwon-Do.
Some people do not find martial arts, badminton, or team sports to be to their taste, just as previous readers find fitness classes and rowing not to their taste. We are all different.
Some people recovering from strokes and other illnesses and injuries, who have been referred to the gym by their GPs, do not have the choice.
They are unable to run around and they gain enormous benefit from attending the gym.
Finally, can we not, now, work together to ensure that we do not lose out on this fantastic investment opportunity and use our energy and passion to forge a viable solution for everyone?
Here's hoping.
